The establishment of Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme comes as a coronation to the wise policy adopted by the Late His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, made a realty by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE and his brother His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister, which laid the foundations ensuring the provision of adequate and decent housing for local families of different economic and social levels, taking into account the priority for special cases, such as, the orphans, widows, aged people and people with special needs.
The Programme constitutes one of the important and prominent additions to the projects and programs which aim to serve the locals and meet their needs with regard to the provision of adequate housing, by providing grants and loans for housing construction, completion or conducting the necessary maintenance and additions to the house.
H.E. Dr. Abdullah Balheef Al-Naimi, Minister of Public Works, chairs the Board of Directors, the Board is considered as the competent authority for the Programme management and has the powers of planning, supervising, making general policies, deciding on the housing applications and approving financing programs, the rules and regulations which govern the same.
The Sustainable City is a practical application of social, economic and environmental sustainability in the built environment. It is the ﬁrst operational NET-ZERO energy development in Dubai and a model for a future carbon-friendly world.
Located in Dubailand, The Sustainable City spans over 5,000,000 square feet (46 hectares) and provides a complete suite of environmental facilities that ensure a unique lifestyle experience and an international showcase for sustainable living, work, education, and recreation. The first phase of The Sustainable City comprises ﬁve residential clusters, a buffer zone, an urban farm, an equestrian centre and a mixed-use development.
The Sustainable City’s water strategy incorporates water saving devices, drought-tolerant landscaping, greywater treatment and reuse, sewage treatment and reuse in landscape irrigation, thus aiming to achieve 100 percent water recycling. The City’s waste strategy provides for sorting bins in every villa, recycling stations in each cluster, encouraging residents to separate their household waste into multiple waste streams.
